Why is a Hockey Gum Shield Essential?
Field hockey is a fast-paced sport with hard balls and swinging sticks. A gum shield (or mouthguard) is not just recommended; it is a mandatory requirement for almost all schools, clubs, and associations in the UK.
A properly fitted gum shield absorbs the shock from an impact, dispersing the energy to prevent cracked teeth, cuts to the lips, and jaw injuries.
Choosing the Right Type of Mouthguard
1. The "Boil and Bite" (e.g., OPRO, Adidas, TK)
This is the traditional style of gum shield. You soften it in boiling water and then mould it to the shape of your teeth.
- Pros: excellent impact absorption and cost-effective.
- Best for: Junior players whose teeth are still changing, or those who prefer a substantial, cushioned feel.
2. The "Instant Custom Fit" (e.g., SISU)
The SISU Mouthguards range has revolutionised the market. Made from a high-tech material that is perforated and ultra-thin (1.6mm or 2.4mm).
- Pros: You can talk, breathe, and drink water without taking it out. It is also remouldable up to 20 times.
- Best for: Senior players who communicate a lot on the pitch and find bulky guards uncomfortable.
3. Braces Gum Shields
If you wear fixed orthodontic braces, you must wear a specialist "braces" gum shield.
- These are designed with extra room/channels to sit over the brackets and wires without getting stuck or causing damage. Brands like OPRO and SISU both offer specific models for brace wearers.
Sizing Guide
- Junior: Generally for players aged 10 and under.
- Senior: Generally for players aged 11 and over.
- Note: This is based on the size of the dental arch, not the player's height. If a child has all their adult teeth ("second teeth"), they may need a Senior size even if they are under 11.
